All Shook Up Chapter 3 Review

I thought it was extremely interesting that parents didn't want their children listening to black artists such as Little Richard singing suggestive lyrics, but they were perfectly fine if Pat Boone sang the same thing. Although it may be cleaned up a little bit it is still almost the same thing. I don't see how a black man singing about sex is any different than a white man singing about sex. I think it would be extremely interesting if parents from the 50's and 60's heard the music kids are listening to today. They would probably have a heart attack. I feel like these early rockers had a huge affect on expressing sexuality that eventually lead to the way we look at sex now. They wanted to explain how it was fine to have sex especially since safe sex now was an option. Also I think American Bandstand was sort of a counter attack against these kind of rockers and was created to 'clean things up'.

  1. Yes, I think today's music would give most of those '50s-era parents a heart attack.

When it comes to lyrics, where you can really see a difference is between Little Richard's original version of Tutti Frutti and the much cleaned up version he recorded. Of course, even that was too suggestive for Pat Boone, who sanitized it some more.

    10/10
